What's the difference between contract and temporary work?
Temporary work means short term or indeterminate duration of cover for example sickness or holiday absence. Occasionally temporary employees are hired to cover a busy period which is not anticipated to last too long. Contract is often more a longer term assignment where the client has indicated that they need someone for a specified time eg 3- 6 months or 1 year.
What does IR35 mean to me?
IR35 only affects Limited Contracts therefore if you are PAYE you would not be affected. As a contractor your IR35 Employment status effectively determines your tax position with HMRC. IR35 legislation, introduced by the Inland Revenue in April 2000, affects anyone who is working via an intermediary, such as a company or partnership. Should a contractor use a Personal Intermediary Services Company to collect their wages, IR35 legislation can significantly reduce their net income, as all payments for work undertaken can be considered as received in consideration for employment. However, with Batchworth your assignment is outside of IR35 as you would be an employee of our company - not classed as self employed, supported by a strong contract to define the relationship.
What should I be aware of moving from staff to contract?
Candidates are often cautious about taking the step from a staff position to a contract position. The main areas to consider is making sure the duration of the contract is satisfactory and the pay rate is adequate to allow for loss of benefits such as sickness pay, pension, healthcare, less notice period, redundancy.
