5 Steps to Securing a Graduate Job
Monday, 12th June 2017
At Cammach Recruitment, we have all been through the late nights of studying, the Red Bull's for breakfast and general stress and anxiety of finishing off your studies. We have worked with a number of Engineering graduates over the last few years in supporting them into their first roles after graduating. This experience has lead us to delivering our "5 Steps to Securing a Graduate Job".
It’s very easy to get caught up in the panic of “I’m never going to get a job” instead of basking in the euphoria of completing your degree, so first things first, celebrate your success and take some time for yourself to appreciate just what you have achieved.
The first few weeks after graduating are also a great time to really ‘map out’ where you want to go and what you want to achieve over the next few years.
The chances are, you will have a CV, but a CV that will have been used to secure you that student job or written with so many clichés that will be adding little to no value to your CV.
A good Recruiter will be able to give you some guidance at this stage and point out what you should be doing to maximise the impact of your CV. Our key top tips for this area are;
- Be concise
- Highlight your transferable skills and how they relate to the job you are applying for
- Adapt your CV to best suit the roles you are applying for
- Show your personality and tell your future employer about you and what you would like to achieve
3- Get your Name out there
This can be very daunting but also very rewarding. You are now on the job market, get yourself out there and speak to people. A key part to this is speaking to Recruitment agencies and Recruiters that specialise in your discipline. From a Recruitment agency angle, the candidates that make this effort at this stage are the ones that we always remember. This is a key part in getting to the next stage…an interview!
4- Plan, Prepare and Execute
So you now have completed the first 3 steps and have secured an interview. The job market is highly competitive and when coming out as a graduate, there is little to distinguish you from your peers on paper, however the interview stage will allow you the chance to show an employer why you are the best person for the job.
Plan ahead every detail, from knowing exactly where your interview is, to whom to ask for and having your interview attire ready to go. Having all these areas planned ahead can help alleviate some of the stress from the occasion.
Prepare thoroughly. Do your research on the company, know exactly what they do and why they do it. Think about what you can add to their business, remember they aren’t hiring a graduate to tick a box, they are hiring a professional that will become a key part of their business.
Execute all these points well and you will have given yourself a great chance of being hired.
5- Prepare for Growth
Now you have secured that job, it’s about plotting your growth and what you want to achieve over the next few years. Many people speak of having a “5 year plan” and this is a great exercise to do. Speak to colleagues and find out how they got to where they are. There are a number of great networking groups for young professionals which can help with your development such as Aberdeen Young Professionals and the Energy Institute Young Professionals Network.
